Aqua Hawk QK (Quat Killer)
Quat Killer: A Comprehensive Solution for Municipal Wastewater Treatment
Municipal wastewater treatment facilities face a constant challenge: ensuring the effective removal of harmful contaminants while maintaining compliance with environmental regulations. Among these contaminants, quaternary ammonium compounds (quats) pose a unique challenge due to their persistence and potential negative impacts on the environment and human health. Quat Killer, a specialized treatment technology, has emerged as a promising solution for effectively addressing quats in municipal wastewater.
Quaternary Ammonium Compounds or QACs or simply Quats are a large family of potent disinfection chemicals commonly used for sanitation purposes in homes, hospitals, restaurants, and food manufacturing.
These Quats ensure the safe production of the global food supply by quickly and effectively killing foodborne pathogens on food contact surfaces.
The problem for wastewater management is that when the sanitized equipment is rinsed off, they remain as active biocides in the sewer and will destroy the precious
wastewater biology and ultimately will negatively affect the treatment process.
Aqua Hawk QK is a chemical blend of long chain phospholipids, surfactants and emulsifiers neutralize the active Quat compounds so they will pass through a wastewater treatment operation without negatively affecting the microbial environment.
Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (Quats) negatively affect both Aerobic and Anaerobic wastewater treatment because they are not broken down during the treatment process.
- In Aerobic wastewater treatment systems the presence of Quats leads to poor flocculation, foaming issues, poor BOD removal and inhibition of the Nitrification process.
- In Anaerobic wastewater systems Quats inhibit Anaerobic bacteria and Archaea leading to poor BOD removal and poor Methane production.
- Quats build up in the biological solids in both Aerobic and Anaerobic wastewater treatment systems which intensifies the negative affect of the Quats over time.
Hawkins Aqua Hawk QK reacts with the free Quats present to bind them up thus reducing their negative effects on the Aerobic and Anaerobic wastewater biomass providing a healthier biological environment with the following benefits:
- Improved Gas Production
- Improved BOD Removal -In aerobic wastewater systems will cause reduction of foaming due to the presence of Quats
- Improvement of the Nitrification Process
- Promotion of a Healthy Biological Process
